If your St. Augustine is being mowed at 3.5-4' tall you can expect it to be this tall and yes, this thick. It takes patience, regular watering and a minimum of 4 fertilizations a year.
Higher cutting results in a less moisture loss, less fungal problems and the same amount of cuts as you would have to do when scalping it. Scalping the lawn reverses the above effects and stresses the grass. It also eliminates most of the blade that actually produces the food for the grass.
